La famiglia Hyde, oltre ad essere stata nel business dell’Irish whiskey per dodici generazioni a partire dal 1640, ha fatto la storia d’Irlanda. Non per nulla il primo presidente della Repubblica (1938-45) fu Douglas Hyde, e non per nulla a lui è dedicato questo marchio.
Tornando alle antiche radici familiari, gli Hyde erano piuttosto conosciuti a Tinker’s cross, a Bandon, West Cork, dove per tre secoli, fino al 1962, gestirono l’omonimo pub. Il quale era rinomato per la qualità dei suoi Irish “bonded” whiskey: distillati recuperati dalle migliori distillerie e invecchiati in loco.
Conor Hyde è la prima generazione della sua famiglia a non possedere un locale, ma continua la tradizione di selezionatore e invecchiatore in barili particolari, di “bonder” insomma. Il new make proviene da due distillerie e viene invecchiato nella warehouse di Little Island.
Il single malt è distillato due volte per mantenere una certa robustezza di corpo ed è prodotto esclusivamente da orzo coltivato nella contea di Cork. Il grain invece è prodotto da granoturco ed è distillato tre volte in un alambicco a tre colonne.
Le espressioni del core range portano in etichetta ognuna un anno particolarmente importante nella storia del presidente Hyde.
