Le “selkies” o “silkies” sono creature della mitologia celtica particolarmente legate al folklore del Donegal e alle leggende tramandate oralmente dai Seanchai. Di fatto, sono foche che una volta tolta la pelliccia si trasformano in esseri umani: bellissime sirene oppure uomini dalla voce incantevole in grado di far naufragare navi da guerra e pescherecci.
Il whiskey che ne porta il nome è di proprietà della Sliabh Liag distillers, che dopo aver aperto un piccolo impianto di produzione di gin a Carrick, nel Donegal appunto, ha iniziato i lavori per una nuova distilleria di single malt e single pot still ad Ardara. Nel frattempo, ha lanciato una serie di imbottigliamenti di blended whiskey distillati altrove, commercializzati con il nome “The legendary”.
