Gelston’s Old Irish whiskey è un marchio fondato nel 1830 da Samuel Gelston, un commerciante di vini e spiriti di Belfast esperto nell’arte del blending. Dopo la sua morte, il suo successore Henry James Neill portò Gelston’s a conquistare anche i mercati internazionali, soprattutto in Australia e Nuova Zelanda, dove Neill aveva fatto fortuna.
Dopo cinque generazioni, il brand è ancora nelle mani della famiglia Neill. Johnny, che nel 2005 ha anche lanciato il gin Whitley Neill, nel 2017 ha riportato sugli scaffali Gelston’s. Dopo qualche ricerca, ha trovato le prove del coinvolgimento della sua famiglia nella proprietà e ha ri-registrato il marchio. La filosofia è la stessa: cercare i barili migliori e imbottigliarli. Inizia con vecchi Bushmills, poi passa a whiskey di West Cork e ora il core range annovera parecchie espressioni interessanti, tra le quali alcune affinate in barili di Pinot nero neozelandese dell’azienda di suo cugino Sam.
Curiosità: recentemente il marchio Gelston’s è stato cambiato in Samuel Gelston’s.
