2011-2021: 10 anni di Whiskyfacile

whiskyfacile-a-space-whisky-odyssey
Blissful youth…

10 years have passed – if you think about it, 10 years is a more than decent ageing period for a whisky cask. And 10 years have passed since we started this blog, the first dedicated to whisky reviews in Italy, in a moment when whisky wasn’t the global phenomenon it is now yet, in terms of production, consumption, investment, collecting.

In 10 years, the world around us has changed – and of course we have changed too. First of all, it’s been the two of us for 8 years, sharing a flat at times, and developing a twenty-year friendship into a ‘common project’, and now we are four: no longer just Giacomo and Jacopo, but also Davide and Marco, friends animated by the same passion, who had already accompanied us in our first years of drinking. Since the two founders of the blog were bearded youngsters (“galloping towards their thirties”, we wrote in our first bio) who naively cultivated a passion while doing something else for a living, now they both have a few white hairs and work full-time in the sector – and whether this is good news for the sector, well, that remains to be seen…

…watch out, he’s mad!

It has been a long, very natural and never forced growth: we have never set ourselves up as ‘influencers’, this has always been the space where we liked to talk about the whiskies we drank, and we always went around festivals and fairs full of samples (can we say it with a certain pride?, we were the first in Italy to do so), looked at with a mix of sympathy and diffidence. Even now, honesty and the pleasure of telling the story of the spirit we love the most prevail over any other possible logic – and we are happy that our way of talking about whisky has been liked and continues to be liked, despite everything.

Above all, in spite of the fact that over the years we have written things like “crisp and concrete”, “dangerously leaning towards mojito”, “eccentric drinks to exorcise the massification that surrounds us all”, “tropical armpit”, “heatherotheque”, “white chocolate on a plate of mussels”, “aromatic noumena of fruity phenomena”… Always talking about whisky, eh, unbelievable! You know, if it were an LSD review site, everything would be more justified. But in short: we need to have fun, otherwise we would be grey bureaucrats of tasting – and we really don’t like it.

Geishalone

But let’s look at some numbers. There are 1628 reviews published so far, 100 are the exact number of occurrences of “tropical” in our reviews (we expected more), only once we wrote “anadiplosis” and 19 times “esters”; we have added about 1550 musical backgrounds (it’s not that easy, is it?); we have done 8 “Tasting Facile” and held another 54 tastings, excluding the more than 40 done online in the last year alone; we have opened, with other scotch-lovers, bottles distilled in every decade since the 1940s (it doesn’t seem true, does it?). We haven’t counted the number of drams we’ve poured at the various whisky festivals, but we’re sure the couple of thousand has been well exceeded. We’ve put all our passion into it, and we hope we’ve infected you a little bit with it…

Ten years have passed, the same time it took Ulysses to return to Ithaca. It may not have been such an epic adventure, and we doubt very much that a non-existent blind author would ever dedicate immortal verses to this decade, let alone in ancient Greek: but it was still an intense decade, which – without meaning to, without even really realising it – changed our lives. It was an Odyssey, yes: but a space Odyssey, the space of whisky. This is not the end of the story, all on the contrary: for the next decade we are relaunching: stay tuned, keep following us and expect some news…
