Let’s carry on our safari between the bottles left over during the last festival. Today we taste the Tomatin 30 yo. This brand was recently imported in Italy: let’s check if the distillery’s quality is well represented by this expression.
N: boom! Welcome to the Tropical Islands! It smells like a tropical fruit juice: loads of passion fruit, ripe pineapple and coconut… Even red fruits, in a jelly version (raspberry); then orange jelly… There’s a funny citrusy note, reminding a tangerine punch. Candied ginger. The official notes talk about green apples: that’s right! Very fresh.
P: the firmness is impressive, with a great body that shows a solid character despite the reduced ABV. It’s consistent with the nose, with a lush tropical note (passion fruit and mixed tropical juice again); then comes the ginger, stressing the exotic and fizzy sensation. Slightly sweeter than the nose, with smooth suggestions of custard and honey. Again jelly sweets.
F: long, intense and juicy. The malt looks out to say goodbye, with hazelnut, coconut and honeyed croissant.
It’s a tropical party! We admit it’s not the most complex malt on Earth, but this Tomatin seems like Dorian Gray: it doesn’t look its age. Super-fresh, indeed: it’s one of the juiciest whiskies we’ve ever tried, reminding to candies and jellies. The tropical heaven in the nose is simply unfogettable: 88/100.
Recommended soundtrack: Lu Colombo – Maracaibo.
