ROYAL BRACKLA 12 YO (2019, OB, 40%)

Il 1998 in un’immagine

That Royal Brackla is one of the three distilleries with the privilege of wearing the adjective Royal, well, you already know that; that the others are Lochnagar and the former Glenury (closed in 1985), well, you already know that too. What can we tell you about it, then? Well, you will be pleased to know that the distillery, sold in 1998 by Diageo to the Dewar’s group, was sold without casks: and therefore the stocks of the new property only arrive until the year of Iuliano’s foul on Ronaldo. Today we taste a sample of the official 12 years, basic version of the distillery’s range: the color is deep gold.

N: quite deep, immediately stands out a juicy Navel orange. The citrus is definitely primary, and the fruity part is completed by baked peaches and cooked banana. This sense of sugary richness is combined with a more autumnal part, between the earthy and damp leaves. The very infused Earl grey tea gives a good idea of the sensation. Chestnut curls in the undergrowth? It still manages to stay fresh and one of us catches a glimmer of lavender or similar herbs…

P: …which instead appears more evident in the mouth, where it assumes the features of a soapy sensation not entirely linked to the rest of the palate. There is a sweetness of caramel and peach jam, milk chocolate and more tea infusion. Sense of oiliness from dried fruit. The alcohol makes a bit of a tantrum and there is also a herbaceous touch. Doubts emerge about the sample.

F: oily, wood, spices sherry.

The nose lets the portion of sherry shine and the profile – although not very original – is satisfactory for structure and variety of suggestions. The palate is so untied that we suspend the judgment, that if it were given today could not be higher than 78/100. Careful with samples with plastic caps, guys…

Recommended soundtrack: FKA Twigs – Sad day.
