For a couple of years now, Chichibu collectors have had two new series to hunt: the Paris and London Edition, made to celebrate the trade fairs held in the two cities (thanks to the very close relationship with The Whisky Exchange and LMDW, of course…). This Paris Edition 2019 is a 6-year-old blend of a Mizunara Hogshead and six ex-Bourbon Barrels, bottled last year for the Paris Live Whisky organized by La Maison Du Whisky – we got a sample of it thanks to the brave Pietro Caputo, who decided to betray for a night his beloved rum with Japanese malt and organized a nice tasting on the facebook group Passione distillati, which we suggest you to keep an eye on.
N: very open and aromatic, it undoubtedly dominates a bourbony and cereal fragrance that is truly seductive. Vanilla, white chocolate above all; very creamy, just like custard. And the fruit? Well, here come snuff peach and pineapple; banana ice cream. A warm touch of wood and hazelnut. Then there are floral hints.
P: quite consistent, with much more dried fruit than on the nose: almonds and hazelnuts – even hazelnut cream, gianduia, going towards that exuberant creamy sweetness that literally explodes here. More pineapple and banana cream; cream and fruit pastry. There is still a note of honeycomb honeycomb and a slight ‘dusty’ patina.
F: long and persistent, peach and pineapple cream, hazelnuts and a hint of white pepper and ginger.
As always happens when we taste Chichibu, we can’t fail to note that this Paris Edition 2019 is a very good whisky, which shows an incredible maturity and shows many facets in front of the drinker… Everything is played on a rather strong but lovely sweetness, with gianduja and vanilla, and blindly you would never guess the age: 87/100.
Recommended soundtrack: Joy Division – Disorder.
