Glencadam is one of those distilleries that we carry in our hearts, even if it does not stand out for any exceptional talent: a bit like certain small champions of little provincial teams, those ‘normal’ players who in some contexts stand out for their spirit of sacrifice and dedication to the shirt, and because of this become idols of the fans; and you always say “ah, if he had a better agent who knows what career he would have done”. Well, for us Glencadam is something like this: all its whiskies are generally good, they are always honest and better than what you expect, and always slightly more complex than expected – expectations conveyed by the general silence that pervades the distillery’s activity and by a not so catchy presentation, in these times dominated by Instagram. All things that we do like here. So today we try to let the miracle repeat: thanks to Corrado, we taste Glencadam 13 years “The Re-Awakening”, put on the market to celebrate the reopening of the distillery, which took place in 2003.

N: swinging happily between a herbaceous profile (wildflowers, barley, pollen, frosties) and something richer, which reminds us of a brioche with apricot jam. Honey, yellow fruit (lots of apples). Almond and frosted sugar, and the result is a nice sugared almond. Do not get us wrong though, because it remains kind of austere. Classic, malty, well done.
P: massive, full-bodied and viscous entry. Here too the palate starts hot, with a nice juicy sweetness from ex bourbon barrels (fresh and ripe apples and apricots), then veering on a really interesting herbaceous side. In fact the prime matter, barley and biscuit is back.
F: medium, a nice spice like saffron and white pepper, malt again.
A yellow whisky: the fruitiness, the cereal side and the spices remind us this chromatic sense. A real Glencadam, to the extent that this is a distillery that knows how to juggle austere and a more fruity and pleasing side well and with balance. No way, we like this too: 85/100.
