Ardbeg ‘Kelpie’ (2017, OB, 46%)

As every year since 2012, Ardbeg releases a special release in the beginning of June, transforming the Ardbeg Day at the Feis Ile into a global event. We missed the launch in Milan, but we’ve heard it was fully appreciated by many friends: congratulations to the Moet team, even if we know that many people think this kind of events is just a superfluous circus (relax, guys), it’s always an afternoon of free whisky for everyone – and we tend to like free whisky, don’t we? 2017 edition is called Kelpie, it’s a whisky matured for an undisclosed amount of time in virgin oak from Adigezia, a Russian region not so far from the Black Sea. We’d better taste now, because well, you know.

N: the nose is warming and cosy, and displays a few Ardbeg stereotypes in a simplified form: everything is well integrated, but let’s start from the sweeter side – vanilla, sugar, apple juice, a soft custard. This sweetness is sticky and deep (cereal and honey bars, you know?, some strudel too). Then the coastal side of Ardbeg comes out, with sea breeze and seaweed, but it never gets to the main stage. Everything is kind of  wrapped in a smoke cloud, that reminds us of smoked tabasco (it does exist: Chipotle) and smoked bacon.

P: it confirms an easy but not simple (?) sweetness, because it’s not the usual modern Ardbeg (vanilla+lemon+Islay)… There’s a stickier sweetness, like on the nose, with caramel, toffee, apples, cristalized honey; and there’s no citrus at all. Then all the islander notes, less maritime than on the nose, but with a peat explosion much more intense and in constant growth. There’s also something medicinal…

F: very long and lingering, it lasts forever with burnt embers, campfire, pork fat dipping on the bbq; and medicinals again…

It’s an ‘orange’ Ardbeg, quite pleasant, enjoyable, full of that sweetness that comes from the virgin oak and devoid of all the usual – and lovely – citrusy character. On the palate, the peat literally explodes, and during the finish it almost seems that it can suck you into a neverending smoky whirpool… Then the day after you wake up and think that this year Ardbeg released a nice Special Release: 86/100. Is it so special to justify the price? Well, it’s hot here in Italy right now, too hot to start complaining.

Recommended soundtrack: Rino Gaetano – Nel letto di Lucia.
