We stay in the realm of OBs, and for this perfectly normal Wednesday we choose an important version of an important malt: 30 years old by Glenfiddich, the best selling single malt Scotch whisky in the world… Not that bad, huh? Color is dark golden.
N: it’s sweet as all Glenfiddichs, it’s round and elegant as a man in his thirties should be: burnt sugar, white chocolate, strawberry tart, brioche… It’s both buttery and fruity, nice. A note of eucalyptus, perfumed wood (sandalwood maybe?). A hint of orange marmalade. Clean and round, with edges of plums and vanilla.
P: surprising: we were expecting a fruity and juicy palate, and yet… A strange woody note is ruling here, it’s almost wood polish (even if ok, we never tasted it, but you get what we mean, right?), some ‘chemical’ sweetness, like gummy bears. A balsamic edge, again. Figs and dates? Some vanilla, again it’s quite tart-y.
F: woody and long, fruity and juicy notes are back, Burnt sugar, with a slight smoky tone.
It’s very peculiar on the palate, but in the very end it doesn’t really convince us, specially if you keep the price tag in count (about 300€): it’s good whisky, by all means, but at the same price you can get more complex malts… In the end, our usual concern connected to Glenfiddich’s abv makes us stop at 86/100.
