This young Macduff from Whisky Gallery, an independent bottler from Bulgary who has been present at the Milano Whiskey Festival for several years now, took the whim of winning a bronze medal at the last Milanese event: we were part of the jury, and we remember this with pleasure – it is time however to taste it properly… Matured in an ex-bourbon cask, it is reduced to 49% abv.
N: very interesting, open and really pleasant. Of remarkable clarity: fresh and fruity, also very sugary, with that sugaryness of young whiskies, almost like a ‘pure’ distillate. Sweetened banana, pear and apple, candied fruit; fruit yogurt. A touch of solvent.
P: here the spirit is even more frank, but without ever being herbaceous, mind you. Excellent texture. Leone tablets with a rose flavouring, then banana (candies and ice cream), icing sugar; pear puree (but also apple puree) and lemon kernel. Rather simple, very honest.
F: long enough, with Haribo licorice and something herbaceous that here peeps in.
Not complex but honest, as we have already written – and it is absolutely a great value. We’re surprised by the sugary sweetness, typical of the distillate, that’s very, very intense. The appreciation of this bottling was helped by an equally fair price (around € 50): a whisky for those who love whisky, without too many frills, and do not mind a simple, sure, but pleasant drink. 83/100.
