WHISKY REVOLUTION “ADVENT CALENDAR” – DAY 23

The “Advent calendar” today makes us drink Glenfiddich 21 Gran Reserva, a whisky from the Dufftown distillery, aged in ex bourbon barrels and subject to a full-bodied second maturation in Cuban rum casks. Keep in mind that we tasted it blind, and its identity was revealed to us only this morning. Let’s see how confused we were by this finish…

Hermetic and iridescent. Between apple pie and doughnut, between blackberry vinegar and candied orange, between raisins and black fruit gelee (there must be a share of sherry in the assembly). On the palate, very light-bodied, still sherry with red&black fruit (blueberries and blackberries), and then a hint of Genoese pandolce, with that shade of aniseed… Red apple peel, even at the end – medium and medium intensity, with a grassy tip, like a herbal infusion.

Re-reading the review in the light of the whisky it turned out to be, we have to say we understood (and even moderately appreciated) the profile, while we missed the age (we would have thought it was a younger whisky, about 12 years old) and the rum finish, mistaking it for a component given by sherry casks. Shamelessly, we reveal that we had blindly assumed it was an Aberlour, those made from both ex bourbon and ex sherry barrels. If you really have to talk about the evil money, please note that this Glenfiddich 21 yo Gran Reserva costs about 180 euros. We give it 85/100.
