GIVE ‘N’ TELL 25 YO (1992/2018, SPIRIT STILL, 51,4%)

One of the thing we’re missing about traveling around for whisky shows and fairs is the little hidden gems you sometimes have the chance to find… This is a great example: when we were attending the Spirit of Speyside Festival in 2018, we fell in love with this Give ‘n’ Tell, a 25 years old single cask bottled by the great guys of Spirit Still – bottlers that don’t seem to be active anymore, so the first batch of bottling seems to have remained the only one. Give ‘n’ Tell is the anagram of… Glenlivet! And we’re really happy to taste an independent Glenlivet, since it doesn’t happen so often to pop into one.

N: a crystal clear example of the roundness and cleanliness made whisky: an ode to Speyside. Hyperfruity and jammy, between yellow apples, peaches and apricots; orange juice, super-ripe oranges, ready to be squeezed. In time, it becomes always more tropical. There’s all the bourbon barrel: vanilla, marzipan, white chocolate. Shortcrust, custard, fruit pastry. There’s also something oily, very pleasant and promising for the palate…

P: it literally esplodes on the palate, overwhelming it with a tropical tsunami of rare intensity: the first impact itself is worth the price, believe us. Peaches, maracuja and ripe pineapple, the coconut from the cask. Lychees. You’ve tried a tropical juice, haven’t you? Vanilla, for sure. Fat, full and oily. Walkers’ shortbread. Always creamier, as time goes by it goes towards fruit pastry. Something vaguely malty and orange again, very intese.

F: lingering, long, very intense. Tropical fruit and orange peel, it lasts until the day after tomorrow. Delicious. Violet candies. When the glass is empty, a herbal note that could only be imagined before.

Excellent: 92/100. A modern whisky for sure, with a lot of cask involved, but without a proper, single flaw – oh, and with a tropical fruity intensity that’s really mindblowing. Ah, Glenlivet… Why don’t you get back to high ages and full strength? Don’t expand your production capacity, please concentrate on the stunning liquid you have. Oh, by the way: this single casks used to cost 125£, less than half of the official 25 yo, bottled at 43%…

Recommended soundtrack: Nu Guinea – Ddoje Facce.
