Oban ‘Little Bay’ (2016, OB, 43%)

Tomorrow the brand new Oban Little Bay will be presented to the public: only new for the Italian market actually, since it’s two years that Duty Free Shops already display it on their shelves. The lauch event will be at 1930, the great milanese speakeasy, and we’ll have four Diageo drams, four cocktails created by Marco Russo and four food pairings by the great chef Diego Rossi. We need to thank Diageo for letting us taste this Oban in advance – let’s see if this NAS will be able to compete with the historical 14 years old… Only thing we know, this Little Bay is matured in “small casks”, whatever that may mean.

N: quite open and inviting, no alcohol here. Little Bay… It has quite a coastal suggestion, with iodine sea breeze and brine. On these solid basis, here comes the wood: citrusy notes (bitter oranges, orange jam), stewed fruit (apples, pears, raisins and plums), honey… There’s also a silky and herbal side, with macerated herbs, tea leaves, rhubarb; some tobacco too. Slight peppermint.

P: great body, quite chewy; it shows again sea water, much more delicate than on Islay. It has also a ‘dark’ depth, again on herbal, rhubarb notes… Some light tobacco. Rosemary, is that you? It reminds us of a honey with pine needles, because there’s also a solid sweet side, made of jammy / citrusy notes, honey, stewed fruit.

F: long and lingering, dried fruit, bitter oranges and tobacco. A peaty and mineral note comes back, in the very end…

Let’s start from the end, from that wonderful and goofy game that we call “number”: 86/100. This new Little Bay is really convincing, it show the identity of the distillery and it displays a deeper side, quite complex. Funnily it appears to us more coastal, but also sweeter and more herbal than the good ol’ 14 yo – we liked it better, for sure. Ah, if all the NAS whiskies were like this…

Recommended soundtrack: Radiohead – Jigsaw Falling into Place.
