Edradour is the smallest distillery in Scotland; its dimentions reflect its fame, if it’s true that most of the whisky aficionados are not great fans. Let’s remember that a famous personality who organizes whisky festival in Milano (ehm… no names, eh) said “I never had a decent Edradour”. Rumors said that when Signatory Vintage bought the distillery from Pernod Ricard in 2002, they were amazed by the low quality of the distillate: and with them the many people that bought a bottle of those years… Pernod used it to “fatten” their blended, while Signatory produces only distillate for single malt, so we guess they had quite a lot to do. We noticed that on the site an Edradour was never reviewed, so here we are, let’s test the official 10 years old.
N: alcohol quite intense for the low ABV, but not lacking aromas. A very intense honey, an aroma of sponge cake, raisins, cake, caramel, malt… For sure there is a good ex-sherry quota: notes of liquor, like a raisin wine. Almond. A vague menthol and fresh flowers hint. Baked apples. We were expecting way worse honestly, only defect is the alcohol a bit too present.
P: exactly like the nose, same notes; in addition there is something metallic (rotten cream? Like a cream croissant 2/3 days old you can find in some bar) which makes the experience unforgettable. It isn’t terrible, it has more personality compared with some entry level, shame for these unpleasant alcoholic and rusty off-notes; altogether, it seems bit less inconsistent compared with the nose. Again a mint note.
F: again old croissant, sponge cake, raisins and coper.
We won’t use too many words to comment, time to be sharp: better than expected, a fair nose followed by a quite aggressive palate, between nice and unpleasant. 76/100 Let’s hope Signatory will do some magic here!
