STAOISHA 6 YO - POSEIDON

Quando Poseidone se la prende con te, c’è poco da fare: puoi solo sperare nella sorte perché il mare non ti travolga.

La furia degli elementi scatenata dal dio si infrange con forza sulla spiaggia di Bunnahabhain: ecco perché ci restano le labbra salate dopo aver assaggiato questo distillato giovane e potente. Distillato nel 2013, il single cask #10536 era un Bourbon Hogshead: l’imbottigliamento è avvenuto in Scozia, presso gli impianti di A.D. Rattray. Non diluito, non filtrato a freddo.

L’isola di Islay si staglia con forza nel mare del bicchiere: il tridente di Poseidone, fatto di torba, fumo e malto, colpisce senza scrupoli il bevitore, che deve stringersi al timone per non essere sbalzato via dalla nave e riuscire a rientrare serenamente in porto. La gioventù del whisky porta intensità, la torbatura di Staoisha è forza bruta, ma è pur sempre l’espressione di un dio: e dunque l’eleganza e la morbidezza non mancano affatto.

Quando avvicini il bicchiere al naso, sei come un naufrago che vede davanti a sé l’onda alzarsi minacciosa, e nelle orecchie senti Poseidone che ti dice: sono la Furia della Tempesta, e sto arrivando a prenderti.

146 bottiglie, disponibili appena cesserà la maledizione perenne che Poseidone ha scagliato su queste incolpevoli creature. Per Glen Elgin e Autore invece ci vediamo... domenica!

AULTMORE 10 YO - POLYPHEMUS

Il tentativo di capire alla perfezione l’identità di un whisky non arriverà mai a una fine. Perché l’inganno sta nei dettagli e alla fine quello che cerchiamo in un whisky è la complessità, la capacità di generare dubbi.

Abbiamo imbottigliato questo Aultmore, storica distilleria dello Speyside con un distillato solitamente vegetale ed erbaceo, proprio perché la sua storia l’ha reso un whisky inafferrabile, completamente differente da ciò che ci aspetteremmo: dopo tre anni trascorsi placidamente in uno Sherry Butt, ha passato i successivi sette in un Barrel ex Sherry Pedro Ximenez della Bodega Gonzalez Byass. Qui tutto è cambiato, Aultmore ha imparato a dimenticare se stesso in un piccolo barile fresco da 200 litri e imbevuto di un vino esuberante come il Pedro Ximenez.

Così non importa quanto forte stringerete il calice per spremere l’essenza di questo Aultmore 10 anni. Se domanderete chi sei tu?, lui risponderà sempre:
Io sono Nessuno.

GLEN ELGIN 12 YO ‘CIRCE’

Il processo di produzione del whisky è un po’ come un incantesimo di Circe, in cui gli ingredienti si succedono seguendo una formula magica in cui ogni passaggio è fondamentale per la riuscita del sortilegio.

L’assurda pozione di Glen Elgin dipende da una ricetta unica fatta di fermentazione lunga, distillazione lenta e condensazione dei vapori alcolici all’interno dei worm tubs. Distillato nel 2008, il single cask #653 era un Refill Bourbon Hogshead: l’imbottigliamento è avvenuto presso le warehouse di Whiskybroker a Creetown. Non diluito, non filtrato a freddo, ovviamente.

Un whisky croccante e concreto, che dimostra la qualità di un malto corposo e complesso come quello di Glen Elgin: molto maturo, fruttato, in grado di offrire anche toni autunnali e mielosi. Ottimo a grado pieno, con qualche goccia d’acqua avviene la magia: ti ritrovi nelle tenute di Circe, trasformato in un maialetto grufolante nel frutteto, a fine estate.

E d’altro canto, in un tripudio di benessere, come fai a resistere a una suadente voce che ti promette immortalità e ti offre secoli di luce?

Two of us managed to visit Scontland last year right before the whole Pandemic went crazy and managed to visit Campbeltown and Islay.⁣

Lagavulin is always a mandatory stop! An instant Islay classic single malt that rarely disappoints.⁣
⁣
Obviously one perk of visiting distilleries is the chance to get some special bottling and obviously the distillery exclusives like this one, a 2018 Distillery exclusive Lagavulin.⁣

The tour was great and the casks selected for the tour were outstanding ( a 22yo single cask too 🤩 ).⁣

During our last Japanese holiday we had the change to try a great Glenfarclas family reserve while stopping randomly in a bar.⁣
This 2004 Family cask ( cask n• 2045) has been bottled especially for Chichibu whisk(e)y Matsuri it’s limited to 309 bottles and bottled at 59%!⁣
The maturation? Sherry hogshead!⁣
⁣
Some whiskies are so vividly connected with memories of the past like this one. While we wait to travel again to Japan we keep the sweet memory of this dram with us.⁣

Durante il nostro ultimo viaggio in Giappone, abbiamo avuto la possibilità di provare un Glenfarclas Family reserve particolarmente buono, così a caso in un bar.⁣
Questo Family reserve 2004 /cask n°2045) è stato imbottigliato per Chichibu Whisk(e)y Matsuri, è un single cask che ha prodotto 309 bottiglie ed è stato imbottigliato a 59% abv.⁣
Invecchiamento? Sherry hogshed.⁣
⁣
Alcuni Whisky hanno una profonda connssione con memorie particolari del passato, e questo ne è un esempio perfetto.⁣

The Ardbeg day is coming, I guess it’s time to reflect a bit on what happened in the last year for possibly the most recognizable Islay distillery.⁣
We can all applaud to the return of age statement with 3 interesting entries:⁣
-The 19yo Traigh bhan⁣
-The 5yo Wee beastie⁣
-The 25yo⁣
A mandatory mention goes to the special release for Mickey heads aged in ex-rye cask, the Arrrrrrrdbeg.⁣
As visible from the avalanche of IG and FB posts, the Scorch committee release has been released and soon the regular release will hit the shelfs.⁣
Here the 25yo which was sold in a blink of the eye despite the not exactly popular price.⁣
The new high-end jewel aged in ex-bourbon casks, limited to 6500 bottles and bottled at 46%.⁣

We close this trio of Islay focused posts with a real treat: a 36yo Bowmore bottled by Jack Wiebers.⁣

It's quite rare nowadays to try such an old Bowmore without breaking the bank but it hasn't always been like this, in 2002 prices were vastly different and amazing products like this were surely more affordable.⁣
But we're not here to discuss economics, just Whisky!⁣
This single cask number 3309 has been bottled at 40,2% and 144 bottles were available.⁣
Unfortunately, nowadays can be found only on auction.⁣
⁣

E' molto raro al giorno d'oggi bere un Bowmore così vecchio senza rischiare il raggiungimento della soglia di povertà, ma non è sempre stato così, nel 2002 i prezzi per prodotti di questo calibro erano decisamente più bassi.⁣
Ma non siamo qui a discutere di prezzi e mercato, solo di Whisky!⁣
Questo single cask numero 3309 è stato imbottigliato a 40,2% e ha prodotto 144 bottiglie.⁣
Sfortunatamente può essere trovato al giorno d'oggi solo in asta.⁣

Rimane comunque un grandissimo ricordo del passato.⁣

The Mac-Talla line is so far composed by three whiskies: Terra, Mara and Strata, all three undisclosed Islay single malts.⁣⁣⁣

So far we tried Terra and Mara, the first is dedicated to the land and the second to the sea of that paradise that is Islay.⁣⁣⁣

Young and with personality these two single malt from Islay manage to be good without cheap tricks like hyper active casks or short finishes.⁣⁣⁣

Per ora abbiamo provato Terra e Mara, imbottigliamenti dedicati uno all'isola e l'altro al mare che circonda quel paradiso che è Islay.⁣⁣⁣

Sul nostro blog trovate le recensioni complete, ma possiamo anticipare che per noi è pollice alzato.⁣⁣⁣

Giovani e con personalità, questi single malt di Islay riescono ad essere molto buoni senza scadere in trucchetti di finish brevi o legni iperattivi.⁣⁣⁣
